On a Dark Desert Highway from Comic-Con

My day at San Diego Comic-Con was cool, but I want to talk about the crazy thing my daughter Anyaugo and I did that night. I didn’t like our hotel, so after a lovely dinner with my agent, we decided to dip.

We drove from San Diego to Phoenix, starting the trip at 10PM. It was…surreal, terrifying at times, beautiful at other times. You ever driven in total darkness through desert (“On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair…”), nothing around you for miles, no other cars on the road, and it looks like something large is running beside your car in the night? Yeah. I won’t be forgetting that any time soon.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the Milky Way. I saw it when we drove through the mountains. Beautiful. Whenever I see it, I can't believe I'm seeing it.

When we reached Yuma around 1AM, we encountered a dust storm and had to get off the road. We sat in the car for about 45 minutes in an empty gas station parking lot panicking, following things via Twitter’s Phoenix National Weather Service account (I’m glad I follow them!). The winds were shaking the car (we were driving an electric blue Dodge Challenger), you couldn’t see anything but gusts of dust.

When it finally decreased, we sped out of there. We got home around 4:30AM. The cats were excited and confused to see us. The sun was preparing to rise and the Phoenix heat was preparing to rise with it.

I can’t believe we did that but we did. We laughed, nearly cried, argued, sang along, talked, what an adventure.
